Location - Medway Queen, Gillingham Pier

Medway Queen Paddle Steamer

ABOUT

If you love history, old boats and photography then this is the ideal tour for you.

A unique opportunity to learn about the history of the Medway Queen Paddle Steamer with the space and time to photograph her properly.

With a maximum group limit of  just 5 photographers there will be plenty of room to move around without the fear of unwanted photo bombing from other visitors.  No rushing onto the next section until everyone in the group has got the shot they want.

HISTORY

Commissioned in 1923 she originally carried passengers between Strood-Chatham-Southend-Herne Bay. During the Second World War she was requisitioned as a mind sweeper for the Royal Navy and also formed part of the 10th Flotilla in Operation Dynamo; making several trips to bring men home from Dunkirk.  After the war she returned to commercial use until 1965 when she became a restaurant and nightclub on the Isle of Wight.  She suffered hull damage and ended up semi-submerged in the River Medina.  She was moved back to the River Medway in 1984.  The 'Medway Queen Preservation Society' was formed in 1985 and has been working ever since to restore her back to her former glory.

ITINERARY

During the tour I will provide guidance on the best shots to be had along with some useful tips on camera settings, composition and handling the light/weather conditions of the day.

We  will also be accompanied by an experienced tour guide who will give you a short talk about the history of the Paddle Steamer and answer any questions about her past.

The tour will begin inside the ship.  A chance to photograph the saloon lounge, engine room, port holes and the inside of the paddle wheels.

We will then progress to the top deck, with views of the dock, funnel and ships wheel.

Finishing off with some external shots from around the dock.
